First I’ll talk a bit about what Mercury in Aquarius generally indicates, then I’ll get more into the details of what else is associated with Mercury in Aquarius and Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius for January and February 2021.
Mercury in Aquarius is generally a great time to be inventive, curious and innovative about what’s possible for your life. Lots of daydreaming can bring up really interesting thoughts and ideas. Mercury in Aquarius is a reminder to focus on creating a hopeful outlook of the future for best results.
It’s especially important to be more conscious of how our thoughts shape our future and to be smart about the direction our minds are heading us toward now.
Aquarius is an air sign, and with Mercury in Aquarius there is a heightened focus on the mind and information. The mind can work especially quickly here and opinions, original ideas and new perspectives can arise spontaneously. In Aquarius, Mercury wants to have freedom of thought, to think outside the box, to ask questions and to know more and especially wants freedom of speech.
With Mercury in Aquarius for a little over 2 months, we are going to see a major focus on information exchanges, digital technology and the tech industry, social media and news media that influences the collective mindset. We are likely to see major shifts in perspective during this period about what people think and believe. Influences of group-think and peer pressure are strongly indicated during this period, and considerations of concepts like a hive-mind or how our perception of reality is like a matrix are worth pondering, but Mercury in Aquarius ultimately says, “Think for yourself.”
Mercury will be in challenging aspect to Mars in Taurus on January 8, 2021 at 9:44 pm ET. Mercury will also be in challenging aspect to revolutionary Uranus in Taurus on January 12, 2021 at 9:59 am ET. This indicates tension and disagreements to be heightened in communications. Mars is the warrior, and in Taurus can be stubborn and willing to fight and work hard for what he wants. Talk of the military and military technology is also likely.
This can indicate a battle of minds and mindsets, thoughts and ideas. Since people have all kinds of different information, and there is so many contradictions these days, agreeing on and understanding what is true and what is false is difficult. Friendships and groups could have difficulties keeping things civilized, but if there is a common cause to fight for, people will likely decide which side to align with. Aggressive, surprising news is likely and may not be well tolerated, getting people hot under the collar. A focus on challenging issues in finance and the economy are also indicated. Issues of cyber-communications could be alarming and we can expect a lot of social media and news media to create conflict, including a push for blocking information exchanges and free thought which can anger and irritate a lot of people that are ostracized by the establishment (Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius). We could also see news about technological advances, talk about science, biotech, and artificial intelligence that could rub people the wrong way.
Mercury in Aquarius will conjunct Saturn on January 9, 2021 at 10:17 pm ET and Mercury will then conjunct Jupiter in Aquarius on January 11, 2021 at 12:19 pm ET.
This can be a pivotal time in information revealed especially about decisions, concepts and actions brought forth by people in positions of power in society. Social issues and political authority will be major topics of discussions. Social changes and resistance to those changes are likely to be in focus. Restrictions of information is likely in tech and media, but the interest in individuals wanting to know more will further emphasize the issue of the control of information and the rules on how information is controlled. Individually we will each have to put on our thinking caps to see through the contradictions to find the truth. Law, justice and karma in the sociopolitical world will be in large focus during this period. In Aquarius, human rights and freedoms relative to authoritative power and “Big Tech” (Jupiter in Aquarius) is in focus, especially regarding free speech.
With Mercury in Aquarius we are likely to hear more about situations and people connected to intelligence agencies and organizations of authority. Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius can also represent religious authority figures and organizations in focus.
Scientific minds are also in focus during this period. Explorations of a wide range of thought of what’s possible are in focus with Jupiter in Aquarius. Limitations, parameters, rules and control measures on thoughts and ideas are also a part of the package with Saturn in Aquarius.

We had a lot of focus in 2020 about politics due to Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. Now with Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, and Pluto still in Capricorn, big political shifts in the world are still in focus, but now a priority by more people will be about the future of We The People dealing with the major transformations happening in the political and business world.
We are likely to see people talking a lot more about the future, and see the humanitarian side of people in favor of helping people create a better future, especially where we see contrasts and conflicts pushed by authority figures and powers in society. Social responsibility will be a big topic during this period.
When Mercury is Retrograde for 3 weeks starting January 30, 2021 the classic Mercury Retrograde issues in communications are set to arise. We can expect a lot tech and cybersecurity related issues. There is sure to be a lot of significant disagreements at this time about the direction of our future collectively as a society. We could see communications go offline, and issues with electrical grids, or even hear of electro magnetic pulses (EMPs).
Much more talk of health considerations are also likely while Mercury is in Aquarius. More questions about health concerns and addressing misinformation are likely to be in focus while Mercury is Retrograde.
The last time we had Mercury Retrograde was in Scorpio and fellow air sign Libra in October and November, 2020.
Mercury will be in positive connection to the Destiny Point in Gemini on January 20, 2021 at 3:40 pm ET indicating new information revealed that points to the direction of our future. Mercury Retrograde will connect with the Destiny Point again on February 10th, 2021 at 1:31 am ET indicating a return or repeat of focus that emphasized what needs to be fixed or learned. Take note of any significant news stories, information or points of view that grab attention around these dates, as well as how news media and social media are operating. Mercury Retrograde will also be in challenging aspect to Mars in Taurus again on February 10, 2021 at 7:16 am ET. We could certainly see a lot of heated exchanges at this time. Though many alternative, innovative perspectives, new thoughts and ideas can arise, it can be difficult to change someone’s train of thought with Mercury in fixed sign Aquarius. Attempts to change people’s minds on a topic can lead to conflict. Taurus is also a fixed sign.
There is sure to be a lot of noise from people trying to tell you what to think. Sometimes when Mercury is Retrograde it is best to step away and not get involved, especially when there is aggressive tension in the air. However, we can expect voices being loud, demanding and passionate about their position, especially about topics that are about the future we are collectively creating by our decisions.
With Mercury in Aquarius I think the most important point to remember is the way the human mind works is like a computer, where external stimuli (external information) has the ability to alter your train of thoughts. Friends, peers, social groups, social networking, social media, news media, events and information in society all have a great influence on the thoughts that circulate in our minds. The mind is essentially programmed on what to think and believe according to exposure of information. It takes a lot of self awareness to recognize how your mind is being influenced, hence why so many people don’t realize it.
This can be a pivotal time for people to make choices and be more conscious of how news media and social media impact what we think and believe and thus what we manifest in our future – as thoughts become things.
Mercury in Aquarius and especially when Mercury is Retrograde is the time to rethink what you think, how you think, why you think what you do.
